Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, offers various programs with strong links to environmental studies, sustainability, and Indigenous knowledge.

First Nations Academic Offerings

Acadia has a Mi'kmaq Studies program within its sociology and history departments, offering courses in Mi'kmaq culture, history, and Indigenous knowledge. It partners with Indigenous communities to integrate local knowledge into academics, and there are scholarships and support systems specifically for Indigenous students.

Environmental Programs

Acadia's Environmental and Sustainability Studies program covers topics like ecosystem conservation, sustainable resource management, and environmental justice. The program often incorporates Indigenous perspectives on land stewardship, traditional ecological knowledge, and sustainable practices.

Plant Science

While Acadia does not have a standalone plant science department, its biology and environmental science programs include courses in botany, ecology, and plant physiology. These programs encourage fieldwork and research, which might involve studying local ecosystems, plant biodiversity, and the interaction between flora and Indigenous land practices.

If you’re interested in how these areas are interconnected or in exploring Indigenous knowledge within environmental and plant studies, Acadia’s programs are designed to support these multidisciplinary approaches

Acadia University has a dedicated Indigenous hub called Wikiklulem ("A Place of Good Relations") in the heart of its campus. This building is designed to create a welcoming space for Indigenous students, staff, and visitors, fostering connection and cultural sharing.

Wikiklulem serves as a center for Indigenous student support services, cultural events, and academic programming that integrates Indigenous perspectives. It hosts ceremonies, elder teachings, and workshops, providing a community space for Indigenous students to feel connected to their culture. The space also symbolizes Acadia’s commitment to reconciliation, offering opportunities for all students to learn about Mi'kmaq culture and the university’s ongoing partnership with Indigenous communities.

If you're exploring Acadia for Indigenous academic offerings and support, Wikiklulem is an integral part of their commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive environment for Indigenous students.

Our visit to campus was wonderful, and our tour guide was amazing and incredibly informative.
