Nutrients in smoke: do they contribute to cyanobacteria blooms in downwind waterbodies?

Steven leduc

Mobilization of particulate matter (PM 2.5)

NUTRIENTS?

What are the concertraion of atmospheric phosphorus?

Blue green algae is cyanobacteria.

Sometimes produce cyanotoxions

They noticed 13 nutrients that were associated with the PM 2.5

All nutrient numbers were higher on smoke days.

Phosphorus, potassium, and manganese are the top three most most to least.

After 5 days of the wildfires smoke other effected about 10 lakes with the cyanobacteria.

Higher cyanobacteria and smoke events occur in summer.

Spline curve analysis proves there is something beyond temperature that causes the cyanobacteria blooms in lakes.

Lakes that have lower cyanobacteria actively and higher elevation tend to be hit harder by the cyanobacteria blooms through the smoke. As well as higher temperatures and light plays a factor on how cyanobacteria effects the lakes.

Marine systems are hit is a similar

MPLCAN: The network of lidar for wildfire smoke.

Approximately 15million hectars burned since 1959.

Fire and smoke intensity

Micro -Pulse Lidar

De - Polarized back scanner lider that scattering light to see properties

Been used for boundaries line dynamics.

It operates in the atmospheric level through a deplorization tool for discrimination.

The type of particulate can be determined by it. Weather and radiation transfer.

MPLCAN: A CROSS CANADA NETWORK.

Micro Pulse Lidar Canada Network

7 network sites

Cannot operate during night.

Aerosol blooms

Integrations of smoke into wildland fire operations.

Indigenous fire stewardship to transform fire management

Joe gilchrist:

Holistic uses of fire

Fire was used from cooking, warmth, cleaning. Essential part of the family

fires were viewed as a gathering spot.

you must start from the community and push out to the hunting grounds and medicine locations.

there is different burn circles for everything,

The upkeep was done by the women who keep tab on what needed to be burned next ect.

Micheala carriere:

When an hunting season or trapping was complete then the fire would be lit to promote the next season the following year.

The plants and medicines require certain growing conditions to be successful.

Burn policies from the government caused overgrowth which then effect the health and populations of the animals.

Main idea is to creating bio diversity. So we must put the fire back on the land.

Eliana Grant: UQAT

Cree elders north if Quebec

They did burning to help development of habitat for the animals.

Being tied to agreements causes problems when trying to get back to the burning of the lands.

Joe gilchrist

He spent much time with fires over 30 years of experience.

Fall and spring was the fire seasons to burn valley bottoms and the riparian areas.

Along trails would be good burning areas, old roads, and rivers .

Piling and burning the already burnt areas to clear up the land and reduce the fuel for 7 - 15 years.

Smoke has been a good way to tell how bad it is getting every year.

Micheala carriere:

They would burn one half of a lake and take that research to from the non burned side to the burned side.

Very transformative since they have all sorts of resources and collaborate to make changes on the land.

They do firecamps every year and provided jobs through this way.

Still having government issues for when they want to do their work and how to do it.

Also the waiting of papers to be signed over to the nation to manage the lands.

A big challenge is the communication of the government's world.

The way meetings are held are disortive

April 1st was made to be burn season right after trapping. Everything comes down to conditions to determine good burning times.

Joe gilchrist:

Funding has been a one time deal which is wrong because of the conditions to be burning and so forth. 100 - 200 year buring cycles. 7 generational thinking.

Budget has been increasing from the government.

Elaina Grant:

Wherever the fire is in Quebec there is a limiting to where the forestry is and where there is no foresty north to south.

The province only attacks fires that are in southern part of the province where there is foresty.
