The Fredericton Capital Region is situated within the Wolastoqey traditional territory which is currently home to three of the six Wolastoqey Communities that includes Sitansisk (St. Mary’s), Bilijk (Kingsclear), and Welamukotuk (Oromocto).

The Wolastoqey Nation are members of the Wabanaki Confederacy, (People of the Dawn) together with four other First Nations that include the Mi’kmaq, Abenaki, Penobscot and Passamaquoddy, whose traditional territories spans areas of what is now known as Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States.

The name "Wolastoqey" means "People of the Beautiful River," a reference to the Wolastoq (Saint John River), which holds deep cultural, spiritual, and historical significance.

Wolastoq (Saint John River): This river, stretching from northern Maine through New Brunswick to the Bay of Fundy, is central to Wolastoqey identity. It’s not only a vital waterway for sustenance and transportation but also a symbol of the deep connection between the people and their land. Efforts are ongoing to reclaim and protect the name "Wolastoq" in place of "Saint John River" to honor its Indigenous heritage.

I found it interesting how the buildings were a mix of modern and historic styles. Many homes were colorful and had beautiful, detailed architecture, which I really enjoyed. The food has also been wonderful, and the area has a charming, small-town vibe. It was nice to explore a bit during my free time and appreciate the brick building features. The music scene each night was vibrant, with plenty of options. I definitely enjoyed the live performances, ranging from hip-hop to jazz and folk music. Each morning, I woke up to a breathtaking sunrise view over the rive from my hotel room, with vibrant reds and oranges splashing across the sky.
