During our recent visit to the Women’s Resilience Centre, we were moved by the warmth, beauty, and functionality of this space. The centre’s design is a celebration of First Nations heritage, with architecture that incorporates traditional features and details throughout. The atmosphere feels both welcoming and empowering, providing a space that’s ideal for gatherings, whether for business or family.
The centre is not only aesthetically inspiring but also built to be resilient. It’s designed to run independently for up to two weeks, maintaining a steady temperature between 16-18 degrees Celsius. Solar panels support the building's energy needs, keeping electricity costs impressively low at around $26-29 a month. This level of sustainability reflects the community’s commitment to both environmental stewardship and self-reliance.
The resilience centre is part of the legacy of the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association (NSNWA), which has been supporting Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals for over 50 years. Established in 1972 by Helen Martin (Membertou), Annie Johnson (Eskasoni), and Martha Julien (Millbrook), the association was formally incorporated in 1977.
Today, the NSNWA operates out of its main office in Millbrook, with an additional office in Sydney, and serves communities across the province through a network of 15 local chapters. These chapters include Nova Scotia’s 13 First Nations communities and two off-reserve zones in Halifax and Sydney. Governed by a Board of Directors with representatives from each chapter and two elders, the association provides critical programs, services, and advocacy for Indigenous women and their communities.
This tour reminded us of the importance of spaces that not only embody resilience but also nurture it, offering a foundation for healing, support, and cultural pride. The Women’s Resilience Centre is a testament to the strength of Indigenous women in Nova Scotia and their unwavering commitment to community and heritage.
